The SOLD Activist Vision Trip

To raise awareness about human trafficking and child sex slavery in Thailand, we need activists who know what they’re talking about. When it comes to understanding these realities — and what can be done to help prevent them — there is no better way than to see and experience them for yourself. That’s why we host our Activist Vision Trips: to give creative, compassionate people the experience, knowledge and tools needed to spread the word and take meaningful action.

About the Activist Vision Trip

Our Activist Vision Trips take place once a year and are led by SOLD’s president Rachel Goble. We give priority for placement on these trips to existing SOLD donors and supporters who have already expressed an interest in and commitment to the mission of preventing child exploitation. Space is limited to 12 individuals, and participants must be at least 18 years of age to qualify.

The SOLD Project’s Activist Vision Trip is comprised of two parts:

  1. A 7-day trip to Thailand, where activists will see the problem of child sexual exploitation firsthand and visit with SOLD’s partner organizations. This gives activists a more complete picture of the issues to begin to understand the importance and necessity of prevention.
  2. The opportunity for participants, with the help of our US staff, to become further involved in the prevention of child exploitation by creating and committing to a strategic response of their choosing.

Cost: $1,500, not including international airfare. This includes $1,200 in trip costs plus $300 in tax-deductible donations to the SOLD Project and our participating partner organizations: Home of New Beginnings and The HUG Project. Participants are responsible for purchasing their airfare to and from Bangkok. These amounts are meant to serve as an estimate only and are subject to change.

Our Upcoming 2016 Activist Vision Trip

Our 2016 Activist Vision Trip will take place September 19th-26th 2016, beginning in Bangkok, continuing to Chiang Mai and ending in Chiang Rai where we will visit the SOLD Resource Centers. In addition to learning about the complex historical, social, and economic layers of the human trafficking and sex trade industry, participants will meet with a few of SOLD’s partner organizations also doing impactful work in these fields as well as some of the SOLD staff and scholarship students.

This year’s trip will be co-led by Rachel Goble, President of SOLD, Brian White, SOLD’s Los Angeles representative and veteran Vision Trip leader, and Shannon Griesser, SOLD’s Boston representative. Shannon, our newest trip leader, became a passionate SOLD supporter after her experience on the 2015 Vision Trip inspired her to get more involved with the organization. Since then, Shannon worked to secure a grant for the new SOLD Resource Center in Chiang Rai and remains a vocal advocate for the cause.

We are structuring this experience to be intentional, educational and engaging. If you are someone who is inspired, open-minded and interested in learning more about human trafficking and SOLD’s work in prevention, we’d love to have you join us!

Who Should Apply?

We look for people who are serious about getting involved with SOLD and our mission, and we’re here to help you make a real difference. We seek individuals who have demonstrated a passion for and a commitment to social justice. Before you leave for Thailand, we will provide a list of reading materials, more information about the trip’s itinerary, and brief cultural training. We will also have conversations throughout the trip to engage your education so you return home prepared and excited to share your experience by hosting a Vision Dinner, planning an event, writing a guest blog, or simply inviting your friends to get involved. We will also stay in touch with you for the first month after you return to assist you in fulfilling your action plan and to help answer any remaining questions you may have.
